Jonathan Edwards Resolution 31
- Resolved, never to say anything at all against anybody, but when it is perfectly agreeable to the highest degree of Christian honor, and of love to mankind, agreeable to the lowest humility, and sense of my own faults and failings, and agreeable to the golden rule; often, when I have said anything against anyone, to bring it to, and try it strictly by the test of this Resolution.
- Resolved: Never speak against anyone unless it is of the Christian standards of honor and love, and consistent with a sense of my own humility and an awareness of my own flaws. Whenever I've said anything against anyone, I'll examine my words against the strictest testing of the Golden Rule.
The Golden Rule is Not Just a Christian Edict
If you were to take a look into philosophies, mantras, and dogmas outside of Christianity, you’d find a “Golden Rule” in most - if not all - of them. Here are a few in brief:- Buddhism: “Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful" (Udanavarga 5:18)
- Confucianism: "Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you" (Analects 15:23) Hinduism: “This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you” (Mahabharata 5:1517)
- Ancient Egyptian: "This is the sum of duty: do not do to others what would cause pain i done to you." Mahabharata 5:1517
- Incas: "Do not to another what you would not yourself experience." Manco Capoc, founder of the empire of Peru. 6
The Golden Rule is the Rule of God

The Golden rule requires love. Love of God, Others and Self. When this cycle is moving fluidly, it’s picture perfect harmony according to God’s design.
"‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord." Leviticus 19:18 (NIV)
