affirmation: 1. the act of affirming or the state of being affirmed; 2. a statement of the existence or truth of something; assertion

Turning back the clock just a bit here. The year was 2010. I was in the midst of one of my hopeless seasons. I’m serious. I was in a rut for the ages and emotionally and spiritually challenged beyond anything I thought I ever would. As the New Year approached, I reflected upon my place, prayed mightily and determined to change my course.

I’ve never been one for New  Year’s Resolutions. If you want to make a change in your life – do it. I don’t think we should get caught up in a mortal made and overly commercialized calendar holiday. So, instead, I created my “2011 Affirmations” which became the theme – or anthem – for bettering myself, my life and ultimately the lives of others.

As you might suspect, they came through prayer and reflection upon my experiences to that point. They, however, were also very representative of the change I felt needed to occur in that coming year. Over the course of the year that followed, I recited this affirmation several times during my commute to and from work and at other times during the day.

I cannot even begin to tell you the impact it had in my life. With each day, my personal confidence in myself increased and I was better able to focus on the light in my life while ignoring the darkness that dwelled.

I’m going to share my 2011 Anthem here. There have been others that followed, but this is the one that started the change I sought to see in myself. Thanks be to God.

Focus your eyes.
Free your mind.
Color outside the lines.
Stand tall.
Take action.
Move ahead.
Learn from it all!
God’s on your side,
Be nobody’s doormat!

So there’s my mantra. My affirmation. My divinely inspired battle Cry. My Anthem.

What about you? What’s your anthem?

If you don’t have one, you don’t need to wait for the New Year to make one. Pick one area of your personal character that you’d like to see developed.  Pray over it. Write it on a sticky note and put it on your sun visor or on your mirror, locker, coffee maker – anywhere you’ll frequently see it.

Repeat it often.

Let me know how it goes!
