Refining Life, on Purpose

Joy! Coming this Christmas Eve

We’re very excited to be presenting another 1Glories title, this Christmas Eve. Stay tuned for more information about Joy! Unto the World in the days ahead.

Advent 2012: Repaid with a Million Ages of Glory

Each instant of present labor is to be graciously repaid with a million ages of glory. ~ J.W. Alexander This simple one line stood out to me. As I often do, I sought more from the source. It led me here. But first,  little background on who James Waddel Alexander was. Alexander was an American Presbyterian preacher rooted in Virginia of the early 1800’s. His father was a preacher and academic. Following his education at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University), Alexander devoted his life to Christ as a pastor at a handful of churches throughout the remainder of his life. If […]

Advent 2012: The Human Fund

One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes is the one where George makes up a charity and then tells everyone that, for Christmas, he’s made a donation in their name to that charity on their behalf. He called that charity “The Human Fund”. And then, when his boss offers a $20,000 contribution to the same fund, George momentarily considers the merit of his fake organization – that is until he and the mock non-profit that provides “money for people” is exposed as a fraud. Before there was Seinfeld, and before there was the Cleveland-based organization that possibly was inspired before it, […]

Advent 2012: Mourning the Lost, Finding Home in Christ

With the news of the Connecticut school shooting still fresh in our minds, today’s devotion probably hit with greater impact than it might have otherwise done had that horrific event not occurred. The one line that reads: “Each Advent I mark the anniversary of my mother’s death. She was cut off in her 56th year in a bus accident in Israel” certainly hit me in a new (albeit a “good”) place. But I was also able to gather some optimistic pondering while reading through it. I was really able to relate to Piper’ s reminiscing of his mother’ s passing when she was […]

Advent 2012: Make it Look Real

When I was about 12 or 13 years-old, my friends and I thought it would be fun to stage a fight in a high traffic area so passers by would think there was something wrong. May not have been the most appropriate thing for us hoodlums to be doing and I am not sure what we expected to have come of it, but we could have been doing much worse I guess. So we had it all orchestrated the best that our adolescent minds could muster (surely, we were drawIng much inspiration from Jean-Claude Van Damme in Bloodsport or Kickboxer). […]

Advent 2012: Beyond the Shadows

Lord, I am preparing this blog post using an Amazon Kindle Fire as my youngest daughter lays quietly resting on my lap. Most nights, this is how I blog. Often, it’ s as I lay next to my middle daughter as she tries to sleep or as I sit in a chair next to the bed of my oldest daughter as she tries to sleep. I usually dread bed time because the youthful exuberance combined with my exhaustion from the day makes it a bit overwhelming. But today, my daughters all got extra hugs when I got home because today […]

Advent 2012: Nothing Like the Real Thing

…let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:10-12). Today, I want to pit Jesus and Coca-Cola head to head in a winner takes all brand challenge. In this corner, we have an international juggernaut. […]

Advent 2012: (Re)United in Christ

We are all children of God. And we are all sinful in our ways. God so loved His children that He sent Jesus, who was both flesh and God, to pardon us of our sins. Through His birth, His death and His Resurrection  we are blessed with an invitation to accept and know Christ, and to enjoy eternity in Heaven. This IS Christmas! Today, I have one simple prayer: that you will click here to receive the ultimate gift.

Advent 2012: Worship by Giving Up

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  ~ Matthew 2:10–11 What’s your most prized possession? The thing that you value more than any other? What would it take to get you to give that up? When you give a gift to Christ like this, it’s a way of saying, “The joy that I pursue (verse 10) is not the hope of getting rich with things from you. […]

Advent 2012: Indifference and Hostility

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. —Matthew 2:3 Today’s devotion suggests there are two types of people who do not worship Christ. Those who don’t know (the indifferent) and those who are threatened by Him (the hostile). In my little mind, I have such a hard time even fathoming that there would be the indifferent – people who don’t have the most remote idea about who Christ was and is. But I guess it’s true. I imagine that those who are threatened by Him are aware that they live a life that is […]
