Refining Life, on Purpose

Small: Finding Relevance in God’s Grand Majesty

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. ~ James 4:10 ESV Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. ~ James 4:10 NIV  On October 14, 2012, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner broke the sound barrier, falling from high above the earth to became the first human to travel beyond the speed of sound. During a four-minute plus free fall, he plummeted at a pace of about 834 miles per hour. While it’s a great personal triumph and a remarkable feat, what has stuck with me about the post-event buzz is the commentary from Baumgartner. In interviews, he’s […]

Anxiety and End Times… Considering my 36th Birthday

Today is my birthday. I turned 36 years old. As one of my favorite sayings go, “if I had known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.” It’s a tongue in cheek way of relating that – much like those who have come and gone before me – my body is feeling the wear and tear that comes with age and my psyche is often more spent than it is roaring to go. Regardless of how you may be feeling – whether it’s like me, whether is exponentially worse, or whether it’s infinitely better […]

Reconcile: Finding the Right Balance in Your Life

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble” ~ Matthew 6:25–34 We many times use or hear phrases like “reconcile our hearts” or “reconcile the issue of…” and “reconcile ourselves” when we’re among church going people. It’s usually as we prepare for Godly worship and/or prayer. It struck me today that many people will say or hear the phrase without truly considering what statements like this really mean. I have my own thoughts, but looked up the term “reconcile” over at the Christian Apologetics & Research […]

Review: Godspeed by Britt Merrick

Just finished Goodspeed: Making Christ’s Mission Your Own by Britt Merrick, (David C. Cook). Here are some thoughts: We were made for a mission beyond the mediocrity of routine life. Careers, events and misplaced ambitions detract us from Christ’s mission to be “on mission” for Him in this world. In Godspeed, Britt Merrick challenges us. He helps us see beyond our day-to-day lives and makes sense of how we can join in God’s grand purpose — His plan to restore, redeem, and renew the world. God’s mission to save the world started with Jesus, but it doesn’t end there. Jesus, in turn, […]

Devolved: Pop Music or The American Dream – Can either be saved?

Was reading through Relevant Magazine this evening about pop artist, Santigold. It details her interesting path to her current stage in life as a person and artist. But this one paragraph in which she comments on the saddened state of the “american dream” – which has followed an even more awkward path, but in the opposite direction: “I think the current American Dream is to achieve fame, status and/or riches with the least possible effort or skill,” White muses. “Pretty much to blow up quick by any means. It used to be about earning success through hard work and having the opportunity […]

Poem: When We Again Shall Meet…

When We Again Shall Meet… Ye ole’ country churches, nestled along the county roads, I used to know. Guideposts along the pathway we’d go, to the homelands in which I root. The fire station. The park. The smiley face and… of course, the bow! We stop at the anti-garden sown of stones, fallen meticulous in neatly circled rows. Fearful of my ultimate fate, an’ the moments, we’d all rather not face. I long for recall, the warm embrace, of a cherished soul gone far too soon. The one that has left that massive void, in the core of my stony, […]
