I love a song you can crank and feel the strength and passion stir throughout your whole mind, body and soul. That’s what I get with Crowder’s “I Am” off the Neon Steeple album. No matter how down I am, no matter how worthless I am feeling, no matter how much the tugs of life have me ready to pull my hair out, I can overcome and rise above them through the grace of God with this song and blasting in all its might.
It puts me in my place. It takes me out of the element I am in and puts things into their proper perspective, restoring proper balance between that which is “under the sun” with that which is eternal in Heaven.
As David Crowder explains it:
The name of God when it’s revealed seems like a very big moment in history. He says “I am.” That evokes the idea of presence, of being in his name. For me that is one of the greatest hopes of the Christian faith. No matter where you are in life, you live and breathe in the very presence of God… So many times I forget about that and I need to be realigned to that reality.
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” ~ Exodus 3:13-15
I Am provides a mantra for taking us out of the daily grind. For pulling us from the very things that keep us separated from God. And when that happens, God’s wide open, loving arms receive us. He never once lets go and that’s why the chorus – “I am holding onto you” — provides a great and reassuring visual.
