Refining Life, on Purpose

Advent 2012: (Re)United in Christ

We are all children of God. And we are all sinful in our ways. God so loved His children that He sent Jesus, who was both flesh and God, to pardon us of our sins. Through His birth, His death and His Resurrection  we are blessed with an invitation to accept and know Christ, and to enjoy eternity in Heaven. This IS Christmas! Today, I have one simple prayer: that you will click here to receive the ultimate gift.

Advent 2012: Worship by Giving Up

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  ~ Matthew 2:10–11 What’s your most prized possession? The thing that you value more than any other? What would it take to get you to give that up? When you give a gift to Christ like this, it’s a way of saying, “The joy that I pursue (verse 10) is not the hope of getting rich with things from you. […]

Advent 2012: Indifference and Hostility

When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. —Matthew 2:3 Today’s devotion suggests there are two types of people who do not worship Christ. Those who don’t know (the indifferent) and those who are threatened by Him (the hostile). In my little mind, I have such a hard time even fathoming that there would be the indifferent – people who don’t have the most remote idea about who Christ was and is. But I guess it’s true. I imagine that those who are threatened by Him are aware that they live a life that is […]

Advent 2012: The Guiding Hand of God

One of the things I love about the way God speaks to us through His word is the dialectics – the idea that polarity exists within the context of the whole. I’ m not suggesting that it’ s contradictions or that God’s word and promises change. Rather, He uses the polarizing view and nature to understand concepts and magnitudes of them. For example, in today’ s devotion, the Magi are guided by a star to “come and see” the newborn king. To this day, the smartest mins on the planet are unable to provide an explanation for how a star […]

Advent 2012: Bringing the Gospel to All Nations

“And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising.” ~ Isaiah 60:3 Matthew portrays Jesus at the beginning and ending of his Gospel as a universal Messiah for all nations. When I think about how much the world has changed in terms of ability to connect with one another over the last 20 years, it’s both scary and encouraging. As a kid, I remember physically writing letters to pen-pals in other countries and then mailing those letters and waiting days, weeks, sometimes months for response. Today, we can shoot an email and have a response in […]

Advent 2012: Shining a Light of Inner Peace

This is a personal reflection of today’s Advent devotion from Great News for Great Joy (download for free now from Desiring God). Please also share your reflections in the comments area. A few years back, I was going through a rough time that was filled with anxiety, fear and hopelessness. I hadn’t lost faith or belief in God, but I was desperate for some form or personal restoration. I did an assessment of my life, largely through prayer. I developed the first of my yearly affirmations, designed to be read daily and in times of need. Near the end of […]

Advent 2012: Master and Servants

This is a personal reflection of today’s Advent devotion from Great News for Great Joy (download for free now from Desiring God). Please also share your reflections in the comments area. We often hear things like, the student has become the teacher or – albeit to a much lesser extent – the servant has become master. The passage from John (15:20) in today’ s devotion really stood out to me because of that. As we draw nearer to the day in which we commemorate the birth of the one true Master of all the universe (no, it’ s not He-Man), we […]

Advent 2012: All Things Big and Small

This is a personal reflection of today’s Advent devotion from Great News for Great Joy (download for free now from Desiring God). Please also share your reflections in the comments area. I’m continually amazed at the ways God will take seemingly insignificant moments or things and turn them into something spectacular. I can name many times in my own life where, as events unfolded, I was witness to God using the “unusable” for a higher purpose in his kingdom. This is no more true than when considering the birth of Jesus and the days leading to it. Think about how […]

Advent 2012: Great Expectations

This is a personal reflection of today’s Advent devotion from Great News for Great Joy (download for free now from Desiring God). Please also share your reflections in the comments area. God was coming to visit his creation. In the days leading up to Jesus’ birth, there was great expectation among many whom believed God to have withdrawn from their lives. And then He came in a way no one expected. How many times have you felt like God had left your side only to later look back and find that He not only been there, but found that He was […]

Advent 2012: Cheerful Humility

This is a personal reflection of today’s Advent devotion from Great News for Great Joy (download for free now from Desiring God). Please also share your reflections in the comments area. It’s interesting that, when pondering the role of humility in the Christian walk, there is often a reward granter to those who feel the least deserving. I find the final paragraph of today’s devotion particularly interesting when it states that it is souls such as these that can best magnify the Lord. I guess a line does shine brightest in the darkest of environments. Such is true of humanity. […]
