When buiding the vision for 1Glories, I labored mightily to come up with a logo. Believe it or not, it had been sort of stressful too. But I just couldn’t come up with a good concept that 1.) is unique, 2.) can genuinely and simply characterize 1Glories and 3.) has timeless significance. I finally chose to include a dragonfly within the logo. Lot’s of reasons. Let’s start with scripture.

For you formed my inward parts;
    you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
    my soul knows it very well.

 ~Psalm 139:13-14

I toyed around with a lot of different concepts, but things kept coming back to dragonflies. Now I don’t know if there is a single reference to dragonflies in the Bible, and they perhaps sound quite mythical, but here’s why I ultimately settled on including a dragonfly in the logo. Dragonflies represent life transformation better than any other creature on earth.

Interestingly, depending upon the time and culture, the dragonfly has been associated with good as well as evil. In this particular case, we’re associating it with the goodness of personal growth, renewal, reliance upon God for strength and more.

Few creatures have as interesting a life metamorphosis as a dragonfly.

Few creatures have as interesting a life metamorphosis and life transformation as does the dragonfly.

The Transformation that Comes with Christ in Our Lives

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Few creatures have as interesting a life metamorphosis as a dragonfly. They hatch from eggs that have been laid on the surface of water or in mud. The eggs hatch into nymphs and spend years under water before they become adults. During those years, it sheds its outer layer at regular intervals before finally coming out of the water by climbing onto a blade of grass. It sheds its casing one last time and emerges in the adult likeness we commonly associate with the creature. This transformation and renewal can be easily paralleled with spiritual renewal and regeneration and therefore provides a good representation of God’s grace and glory.

Bonus: Here’s more reasoning

Approximately 80% of a dragonfly’s brainpower is utilized for vision. Not only are their eyes super magnified, a dragonfly sees in all 360 degrees around it. Could you imagine if we looked at all aspects of our lives with such a broad perspective and spent 80% of our energies into seeing what God reveals to us?
