Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. —Hebrews 2:14–15

We’ re growing closer to Christmas and the conclusion of the Advent season. As I survey the world around me in the context of freedom, I can’ t help but think about what true freedom represents.

It’ s not lost on me that the supposed end of the world is even closer than Christmas. Flashbacks of Y2K permeate my memory as I consider the massive waste of time and money that came of that literal non-event. Not to mention the countless hours that were spent by millions of people as they worried… literally obsessed over what was never to be.

I suspect that December 21, 2012 will go down in history as such a non-event and then all the doomsday seekers will enslave themselves to the next great moment that is equally lacking in truth or reality.

I’ll admit, I have intrigue over things like this and I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist. However, it’s more novelty to me than anything. It’s sort of like horoscopes – they so little, they actually can say quite a lot.

But time is much better spent in placing full faith in the one true being whom to which we all are called to be bonds servants. In that of Jesus Christ. For it is through Him, we receive freedom from all gripping of the soul because He alone offers the freedom from the shackles of doubt, worry, fear and even death.

Sure, there will continued hardship in the time we remain of this world, but in genuine worship and service to Him, we have the blessed assurance that we will one day be free from all entrapment. That assurance, my beloved, is real freedom.
