Matthew portrays Jesus at the beginning and ending of his Gospel as a universal Messiah for all nations.
When I think about how much the world has changed in terms of ability to connect with one another over the last 20 years, it’s both scary and encouraging. As a kid, I remember physically writing letters to pen-pals in other countries and then mailing those letters and waiting days, weeks, sometimes months for response.
Today, we can shoot an email and have a response in hours or minutes. We send a text message and have response in seconds. We Tweet or meet on Facebook, have instant chats via text, audio and video. And, as if that weren’t mind-boggling enough, we have software that can instantly translate our messages to each other to further increase the ease of contact and communication among all nations.
It scares me because it’s a drastic change and change is frightening. But when I consider it in a more worldly context, it’s both sobering and reassuring. You see, Christ came to unite us – in fact, as today’s devotion says, “one of the repeated prophecies was that the nations and kings would… come to him as the ruler of the world”.
And this emergence in advanced technology makes a greater likelihood that we can share the Good News of Christ with people of all nationalities. Wise men do in fact still seek Him. As His humble servants, we’re obligated to do our part in helping them find Him.
